Newcastle United slashed more than half a million pounds from their weekly wage bill on Wednesday after six players officially left the club.
Wednesday, July 1, marked the start of the 2026/27 season meaning those players who were out of contract at the end of June are no longer employed by Newcastle United.
The Magpies announced earlier this year that six first team players – Kieran Trippier, Emil Krafth, Matt Targett, John Ruddy, Max Thompson and Aaron Ramsdale, who was on loan from Southampton – would leave the club this summer at the end of their contracts.
Fresh off the heels of Anthony Gordon’s £69million sale to Barcelona, it means Newcastle have shifted seven contracts off their wage bill meaning they are saving a huge chunk of money ahead of their summer transfer rebuild.
Using estimated salary figures historical contract information website Spotrac, Gordon was raking in £150,000 per week at Newcastle, and was the club’s second highest earner behind Bruno Guimaraes.
Trippier was taking home £120,000 per week and so, too, was Ramsdale, with Newcastle agreeing to cover his salary during his loan spell from the Saints.
Matt Targett was making £60,000 per week and Emil Krafth was bringing in £55,000 per week. Ruddy was earning £15,000 per week and there was no figure available for Thompson.
Add all of that together and Newcastle should have around £520,000 extra breathing room per week in salaries they are now saving from this week onwards.
They could make further savings with further sales, of course, and the club yesterday also announced the exit on loan again of goalkeeper Odysseas Vlachodimos. How much of his salary Sevilla are paying is unknown.
Newcastle fans will hope that money will be reinvested into the playing squad, although United do have to be mindful of the Premier League’s new Squad Cost Ratio rules, especially after falling foul of UEFA’s regulations and being hit with a fine.
The Magpies have already signed goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen from Stade Reims and are in the market for another goalkeeper, a right-back, midfielder, winger and potentially a forward this summer.
