Whilst the news of Sandro Tonali leaving was instantly followed by widespread reporting that Newcastle United had reached agreement to sign Bazoumana Toure from Hoffenheim, with a transfer fee of £40m+ said to have been agreed.
The exciting 20-year-old winger has been part of the Ivory Coast squad at the 2026 World Cup. The 20-year-old winger came off the bench in the knockout match on Tuesday against Norway but couldn’t prevent their elimination from the competition in a 2-1 defeat.
A successful year in Sweden with Hammarby ended with a then 18-year-old signing for Hoffenheim in a deal worth around £14m on 1 February 2025. The next 16 months seeing Toure impress in 43 appearances for Hoffenheim, the young player scoring five goals and getting 12 assists so far for the German club, including playing a big role in them finishing fifth in the Bundesliga last season. The Mail report: ‘He plays as an inverted left winger. Fast and good in one on ones Toure would be viewed as a replacement for Anthony Gordon.’
Now The i Paper reports that two other targets are confidently expected to follow Toure through the door. These targets understood to be keen to join Newcastle United and ongoing talks (fingers crossed!) moving towards successful conclusions.
Johan Manzambi
The interest in Johan Manzambi was first reported by Sky Sports on Sunday, the exciting young midfielder excelling at the World Cup after an excellent season with Freiburg. Aged only 19 when the 2025/26 Bundesliga season kicked off, Johan Manzambi was a key player as Freiburg reached the Europa League final and finished seventh in the Bundesliga. He managed 13 direct goal involvements in total last season for his club from midfield, scoring seven and getting six assists. Sky Sports reporting that the SC Freiburg midfielder is valued at £40m+.
Like Bazoumana Toure, Johan Manzambi is also only 20, both players having the profile that Newcastle United are said to be targeting this summer, emerging young talent on the continent.
The 20-year-old-has already scored three goals in the 2026 World Cup group stage, twice in the win over Bosnia-Herzegovina and then the winner against Canada which meant Switzerland won the group ahead of the tournament co-hosts.
He was in great demand in international terms, born in Geneva to parents who are from Angola and DR Congo. Switzerland acted swiftly to ensure Johan Manzambi would commit to them, getting his first senior cap as a 19-year-old and the now 20-year-old has already made 16 appearances for Switzerland and scored six goals. Manzambi and Switzerland take on Alegria in the early hours of Friday (UK time) for a place in the last 16 of the World Cup.
Lamine Camara
It was back in May before last season had ended, when it was first reported in France that Newcastle United were trying to sign Lamine Camara.
The 22-year-old midfielder currently with Monaco. Lamine Camara was signed from Metz for £13m at the age of 20 back in 2024. The midfielder has started 73 Ligue 1 matches in his career, scoring four goals and getting 16 assists.
Back in May it was Foot Mercato reporting that Newcastle United had held talks with the Senegal international about a potential move this summer.
The 22-year-old was with Senegal at the 2026 World Cup finals, in a group with France, Iraq and Norway. Lamine Camara featured in all four matches at the World Cup as Senegal were cruelly denied a place in the last 16 when losing to Belgium on Wednesday having led 2-0.
Lamine Camara has drawn comparisons with the likes of N’Golo Kanté and Sergio Busquets, a versatile box to box player and all round midfielder.
Foot Mercato said back in May that their information was that Monaco were wanting €50m (approx £43m) for the midfielder and that Newcastle United had also held talks with Lamine Camara’s representatives.
These talks now reported to have intensified whilst Lamine Camara was at the World Cup and Newcastle United now hopefully set to conclude a deal with Monaco and the midfielder, who now has 46 appearances for Senegal despite still only aged 22.
I suppose for purely selfish reasons, the fact that both Camara and Toure are now out of the World Cup can now hopefully speed up their transfers getting finalised. Though of course Manzambi very much still active at the tournament with Switzerland.
